NEW DIRECTIONS
Head lice policyPurpose
To maintain a healthy environment for both clients and employees in the management and prevention of head lice.
Scope of Policy:
This policy applies to all New Directions staff, clients, and visitors.
Responsibilities and Procedure
- Program nurses will assist parents, employees, and clients with education regarding the myths and facts of head lice transmission and infestation as needed. Education is a critical role for parents in prevention and control of outbreaks. It is vital that parents communicate with the program nurses should a case of lice be identified so screenings for that age group and/or enrolled siblings of the client may begin as soon as possible.
- A letter will be sent home at the start of the program outlining both the parent/guardian and program roles in the management of head lice. A signature on the returned letter acknowledging understanding of the policy will be attached to each client’s electronic medical record.
- When a case of “live lice” (active infestation defined as presence of live lice and/or eggs found within 1/4″ of scalp) are identified, the client will report to nursing office from the classroom or group room to confirm the presence of head lice and a parent/guardian will be notified of findings.
- The parent/guardian will be educated on appropriate and effective over the counter treatments as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
- When active infestation is identified, a letter will go out to all parents/guardians at that age group and to parents of siblings. Parents/guardians will be asked to assess their children daily for one week and report any findings so that appropriate treatment education may be provided. Any additional active infestation after 10-14-day period will warrant a second letter and call to the PCP for further evaluation and/or treatment.
- “No nit” policies are discouraged by multiple sources including the CDC and AAP. Therefore, clients will not be sent home from the program solely based on assessment indicating live lice or nits. Parents/guardians of these clients will be notified and strongly encouraged to monitor their children accordingly. Transportation to and from the New Directions Program will depend on the home school district policy regarding nits and transportation.
- Assessments and identification of all individuals will remain confidential. New Directions will take every precaution to treat those affected with sensitivity and privacy. Head lice is a nuisance and embarrassment to the student so any absence as a result of infestation will be considered an excused absence.
