NEW DIRECTIONS
metal detector policyMetal Detector Policy
To maintain a safe environment for all New Directions students, staff and visitors.
Scope of Policy:
This policy applies to all New Directions staff, clients, and visitors.
Responsibilities and Procedure
- New Directions will provide a copy of this policy to all parents/guardians at the beginning of every school year.
- A copy of this policy will also be provided to parents/guardians when their child enrolls after the school year has begun
- During New Directions operating hours, the acting security trained staff member will be stationed at the main entrance.
- All entering the New Directions facility will be required to pass through a metal detector.
- All will be asked to remove metal objects from their pockets, bags and/or belongings before going through the metal detectors.
- These objects will be placed in a bin and returned to the individual after they pass through the detector, if the personal items are permitted to be brought onto school premises.
- When metal is detected, the metal detector system will light up red in the area in which the metal is detected.
- In the event a detector alerts that metal is present on the individual, the individual will be requested to indicate what metal is causing the alarm and to remove such objects for inspection. If the person then clears the detection process without activating the alarm, the individual will be cleared to enter the school.
- When no additional objects are additionally removed, a hand wand inspection of the person’s body will be performed to help determine what is causing the metal detector to alert.
- The hand wand scanning will begin at the toes and continue to the head in all directions without touching the individual’s body.
- If an individual’s shoes indicate a presence of metal, the individual will be asked to remove their shoes for examination
- When a hand wand inspection also alerts, the acting security trained staff member will inform the individual that a pat down is required.
- The acting security trained staff member will respectfully use the back of their hand to conduct the search
- A school staff witness should be available for all pat down searches
- If the acting security trained staff member is of the opposite sex of the individual requiring a pat down and the individual requests the pat down to be conducted by someone of the same sex, a staff member of the same sex under the observation of the acting security trained staff member will perform the pat downs
- Anyone refusing to participate in any step of this security procedure will not be permitted to enter the New Directions facility.
- A student refusing will remain stationary accompanied by a staff member until they agree to cooperate
- If the student continues to refuse the security check, their parents/guardians will be contacted and if deemed necessary by a school administrator, law enforcement may be engaged
- When a person has been cleared by the metal detector and/or acting security trained staff member. They will be permitted to enter the facility. Once the process of passing through the metal detector is complete and all students and visitors has been verified as safe they will then proceed into the building.
- Weapons or objects which could be used as weapons are confiscated during a search will be turned over to law enforcement.
- If a School Administrator is not present when a weapon is discovered, the onsite New Direction Management Staff and CRCSI’s On-Call Administrator shall be notified immediately informing that a weapon was seized.
- If a responding law enforcement officer is not immediately available, the New Direction Management Staff will ensure the weapon is kept in a secure locked location until the responding officer takes possession
- A security check is not required for anyone leaving the building.
